The Lodge Minchin, No.2710
( Trivandrum )

History Of Lodge Minchin No. 2710 E.C.

Preamble :

During the summer of 1897, seven Brethren namely,

W. Bro. Humphreys Alexander Minchin
Bro. Regunatha Rao Runga Rao
Bro. Edward Charles Mitchell
Bro. Maurice La Bouchardiere
Bro. Ramanatha Rao Ananda Rao
Bro. Regunatha Rao Ananda Rao
Bro. Panchanatha Iyer Subramonia Iyer

conceived the idea of forming a Masonic Lodge in Trivandrum to promote and spread the genuine principles and tenets of the order. A provisional warrant was obtained from the Rt. Worshipful The District Grand Master of Madras on 20th October 1897, and "Lodge Minchin" named after its founder Master, W. Bro. H.A. Minchin, was born. The official petition was supported by Lodge Pandyan No.2356 EC (now No.49 GLI). The first meeting of Lodge Minchin was held on 6th November 1897 and thereafter held on the First Saturday of every month, till date, except for a brief period of difficult days the Lodge had to pass through. These meetings were initially held in a rented building near Napier Park where the Museum is now located in Trivandrum.

Early Days :

The early days of Lodge Minchin were replete with problems of every sort. It had no premises, and it had no funds worth mention, nor had it sufficient membership support. Even though, in the very second meeting of the Lodge, four candidates were initiated together, for the first installation meeting special dispensation had to be sought to conduct the installation with only two Past Masters. In spite of all these the Lodge trundled along, with the efforts put in by a handful of brethren and the patronage the Lodge received from the Ruling House of Travancore. In the year 1903, His Highness the Maharaja of Travancore, condescending to the request of the Brethren, gifted a site of 1.5 acres and an amount of 1,000/- for the construction of own premises for the Lodge. The construction was completed by the end of 1905, plunging the Lodge into heavy indebtedness, from which it could never wriggle out. By 1907, it was decided to sell the land and building back to the government, which bought back the property for 20,000/-. The building which was constructed and sold back to the Government now houses the prestigious office of Director of Public Instructions, DPI Junction, Jagathy, Appeals for financial assistance had meager response from even the Brethren of the Lodge and by November 1908, the Lodge came to a point of inaction. By 1914, it was not possible even to hold a perfect Lodge, as there were only three active members. After 1917, the Lodge virtually ceased to exist. At the District Grand Lodge Meeting in 1919, the Rt. Wor. District Grand Master expressed his anxiety about the future of Lodge Minchin land disclosed that the Lodge has expressed its intention to surrender its Charter.

The Resuscitation :

On 6th December 1919, at a meeting held in the old building near the Napier Park (where the Lodge commenced its activities) the few surviving members held the first meeting after a long recess. This was synchronous with the dawn of a new era of activity and vigor for the Lodge. There was one brother who stood amongst the ruins to fight it out and to see the light. It has to be recorded here that he was none other than Wor. Bro. A.Venkitarama Iyer. He was ably assisted by Bro. P. Krishnan Tampi, W.Bro. K. Parameswaran Pillai and W. Bro. Dr. R.P. Iyer. Brethren, we can say now with pride that the efforts of these brethren have been justified as their successors have seen to it that calamities of the type witnessed in the past never occur again.

As on 31.12.2011 with a membership of 109, the Lodge is the largest in the District of Madras. The keenness and enthusiasm of its members are so outstanding that it has perfected several rough ashlars to unbelievable standards. Punctuality and ritualistic discipline are the watchwords. One could never come across an occasion when the Lodge is close tyled even a minute after the announced time. No ceremony stated, had to be postponed nor one would observe any piques and quarrels, on the Festive Board.

Conclusion :

Lodge Minchin, which has survived the initial years of anxieties of tribulations, and passed through affluent years of adolescence, has now risen to an era of mature consolidation. It does not any longer have the sole responsibility of overseeing the growth of Freemasonry in Trivandrum; Sister Lodges under Grand Lodge of India have come up in land around the city and more will co me. What Lodge Minchin has to do now is to hold up the great principles of fortitude, tolerance and justice. It has to become the model of Masonic thoughts, leader of Masonic culture and centre of Masonic activities. There is no doubt that Lodge Minchin would rise up to these expectations and find a prominent and permanent place in the great edifice of Freemasonry, radiating and spreading the grand and sublime principles of our Ancient Institution. May the Most High in his infinite mercy land grace, vouchsafe to the Lodge, a continuance of peace, amity and concord, for many years to come and grant that the fu ture Masters and members of this Lodge unite in promoting harmony and prosperity and in disseminating Masonic Knowledge.

Mentoring

Mentoring - A Work In Progress

Much has been mentioned about mentoring in the recent past. But I must say that it has been in existence informally for many, many years. In fact it has always been one of the methods of instilling confidence and commitment. Historically, the learning process, through centuries has been by a process of mentoring.
